UPI Turns 10: Record Transactions and Global Expansion Mark a New Digital Payments Era

UPI Turns 10: Record Transactions and Global Expansion Mark a New Digital Payments Era

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completed 10 years, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital payments journey. Over the past decade, UPI has transformed the way consumers, merchants and businesses send and receive money, making instant digital payments a part of everyday life.

UPI Sets a New Record in July 2026

UPI recorded its highest-ever monthly transaction volume in July 2026. According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions worth approximately ₹29.88 lakh crore during the month. Transaction volume increased around 4.1% compared with June.

The latest numbers highlight the growing role of UPI in everyday payments, including QR code transactions, online shopping, bill payments, peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments.

A 13,000-Fold Rise in a Decade

UPI was launched in 2016 and has grown at an extraordinary pace since then. Over the past 10 years, its annual transaction volume has increased by around 13,000 times, reaching approximately 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26.

The system’s interoperability and instant payment capabilities have been key to its adoption. UPI allows users to link bank accounts with UPI-enabled applications and transfer money directly between bank accounts in real time.

UPI Expands Beyond India

UPI is increasingly becoming an international payments platform. As of August 2026, the ecosystem has expanded to 11 countries. Maldives has recently connected its Favara payment system with UPI, enabling real-time fund transfers between the two countries.

NPCI has also partnered with HSBC India and J.P. Morgan Payments to support real-time foreign-exchange settlement for international UPI payments, indicating a wider push to strengthen cross-border digital payments.

What’s Next for UPI?

UPI’s infrastructure continues to evolve, with updates around transaction limits, international acceptance and payment-system management. Recent NPCI circulars include developments related to UPI limit management and global acceptance.

Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for certain UPI transactions has also been a subject of discussion in 2026. However, these proposals should not be interpreted as a blanket charge on all UPI payments.

Conclusion

After a decade of rapid growth, UPI has become a core part of India’s digital payment infrastructure. The record performance in July 2026 and its growing international footprint show that UPI is moving beyond being an Indian payment system and increasingly becoming an important part of the global real-time payments ecosystem.
