The Nifty 50 recorded an intraday high of 24,378.60 and a low of 24,207.75. The Sensex moved between 77,986.84 and 77,472.94. Nifty Bank traded between 57,996.05 and 57,611.85 during the session.

Why Did the Indian Stock Market Fall?

The biggest pressure came from technology stocks. Reuters reported that Indian IT stocks declined around 1.5%, while Reliance Industries also fell about 1.4%, weighing on the benchmark indices. Financial and private banking stocks, however, posted gains and helped limit the broader decline.

Investor sentiment was also influenced by expectations around US inflation data and Nvidia's earnings. Concerns surrounding the US H-1B visa environment added pressure to Indian technology stocks.

At the same time, falling crude oil prices provided some support to the broader Indian economy and banking-focused stocks.

Nifty 50 Stocks: Major Gainers and Losers

Banking stocks remained the strongest pocket among large-cap names. Kotak Mahindra Bank was among the standout gainers, while Axis Bank and ICICI Bank also advanced. Kotak Mahindra Bank gained around 3.5% during the session.

On the downside, Infosys, Power Grid, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra and Larsen & Toubro were among the key Nifty 50 drags. IT stocks were particularly weak during the session.

Broader Market Performance

The broader market delivered a mixed performance. Nifty Midcap 100 declined around 0.10%, while Nifty Smallcap 100 gained approximately 0.81%. This indicated that selling pressure was concentrated more heavily in selected large-cap and sectoral names rather than across the entire market.

Share Market Outlook

The August 26 session highlighted continued sector rotation in the Indian market. Banking and metal stocks provided support, while IT, FMCG and selected consumer stocks remained under pressure.

For the next trading session, investors are likely to track global market cues, crude oil prices, US economic data, currency movements and developments around technology-sector earnings.
