New Delhi, August 27, 2026: Indian equity markets ended lower on Thursday as selling pressure intensified toward the close. Nifty 50, Sensex and Bank Nifty all closed at their respective intraday lows, pointing to a cautious short-term market trend.

Nifty 50 Today

The Nifty 50 closed at 24,090.85, down 116.90 points or 0.48%. The index touched an intraday high of 24,297.45 and a low of 24,090.85, with the closing level matching the day's low.

Sensex Today

The BSE Sensex ended at 76,933.59, declining 539.35 points or 0.70%. The index recorded an intraday high of 77,694.97 and a low of 76,933.59. The Sensex underperformed the Nifty on a percentage basis during Thursday's session.

Bank Nifty Today

The Bank Nifty closed at 57,509.95, down 273.80 points or 0.47%. Its intraday high was 58,012.40, while the low was 57,509.95. Among the 14 displayed banking stocks tracked in the session, 11 declined and only three advanced.

Key Bank Nifty Stocks

HDFC Bank declined 2.23% to ₹711.00. In contrast, Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 1.80% to ₹424.20 and ICICI Bank rose 0.91% to ₹1,443.00. Axis Bank edged up 0.08% to ₹1,256.00.

Why Did the Market Fall Today?

Selling pressure was visible across several sectors, particularly banking, metals, cement and heavyweight stocks. HDFC Bank's 2.23% decline was a major drag on the benchmark indices. Reuters reported that Indian equities fell despite broader gains across Asian markets, with HDFC Bank coming under pressure.

Expiry-related volatility was another important feature of Thursday's session. August 27 marked the first monthly-expiry session after the introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS), with volatility increasing toward the end of trading.

Market Wrap
