Share Market Today: Nifty, Sensex and Bank Nifty Closing Highlights

New Delhi, August 12, 2026: Indian equity markets ended on a mixed note on Wednesday. The Nifty 50 closed at 24,435.95, down 35.75 points or 0.15%, while the BSE Sensex ended at 77,966.35, lower by 187.90 points or 0.24%. Both benchmark indices recovered sharply from their intraday lows after falling nearly 1% during the session.

The Bank Nifty outperformed the broader market and closed around 57,885, gaining roughly 440 points during the session. Banking stocks including SBI supported the recovery, while IT, FMCG and several Tata Group stocks remained under pressure.

Why were stocks gaining?

Hindalco Industries was among the strongest Nifty gainers, rising 2.80% to ₹1,078.50. The rise was supported by higher aluminium prices and concerns around global alumina supply after production disruptions at Brazil's Alunorte refinery.

Bharti Airtel gained 1.56% to ₹1,945, while SBI advanced 1.50% to ₹1,082. Banking stocks were among the key areas of strength during the session.

The Nifty Midcap 100 also ended higher by 0.28%, with NALCO, Vodafone Idea, BHEL, Indus Towers and Astral among the leading gainers.

Why were stocks declining?

TCS was the biggest Nifty 50 laggard, falling 3.93% to ₹2,349.70. Selling pressure across Tata Group companies intensified following the announcement concerning Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek reappointment.

Max Healthcare declined 3.13% to ₹1,007.50, while Apollo Hospitals fell 1.75% to ₹8,597, amid pressure on private healthcare stocks following regulatory recommendations related to hospital fee caps.

Among the broader market stocks, PI Industries fell 9.05%, making it the biggest decliner in the cited Nifty Midcap 100 list.
